Power station selection / CPAP

Best Power
Station
for CPAP.

Build an overnight energy budget before choosing a battery. Match your device, prescribed setup and backup duration to a compatible power source.

Quick answer: An illustrative 20 W load for eight hours needs a 214 Wh battery target after rounding up. At 60 W, the same night needs 640 Wh. These are planning examples, not typical consumption ratings for any CPAP model.
CPAP planning scope: This guide estimates energy. It does not certify a medical backup system or cover life-support ventilation or oxygen equipment. Confirm your CPAP backup plan with your equipment provider and follow both manufacturers’ instructions. Keep prescribed therapy settings unchanged unless your care team directs otherwise.

CPAP OVERNIGHT BATTERY MATCHER

If you measured the entire setup with your normal settings, enter that total in the base field and set extra watts to zero. Do not double-count heat already included in the measurement.

The extra-watts field is a budgeting input, not a therapy control. Do not disable prescribed features to make a small battery fit. The examples do not predict the effect of settings on your specific machine.

Total planned draw20 W

Target Wh = total W × hours/night × nights ÷ 0.90 × 1.20.
* Planning nights = capacity × 0.90 ÷ 1.20 ÷ (total W × hours/night). Assumptions: 90% efficiency + 20% margin.

Full starting charge. No recharge assumed. Fractional nights are energy estimates, not verified complete therapy sessions. Measure with your actual power supply or approved converter and operating setup.

Lower-draw illustration. The unrounded capacity target is 213.33 Wh. Not a manufacturer CPAP specification.

60 W / 8 HOURS / 1 NIGHT
640 Wh

Higher-draw illustration. Includes 20 W base plus 40 W additional draw. Replace both with actual measured inputs.

60 W / 8 HOURS / 3 NIGHTS
1.92 kWh

No-recharge target for three identical nights. A base 1 kWh battery falls below this scenario’s energy budget.

These constant-load illustrations do not predict a particular machine’s consumption. Heater duty cycle, prescribed pressure, ambient conditions and the power pathway can change actual draw. A decimal night does not guarantee a complete night.

Choose the right pathway

AC Supply. Approved DC Converter. Different Checks.

AC / ORIGINAL SUPPLY

Check the complete connection.

Confirm that the power station’s output voltage and waveform meet the CPAP manufacturer’s requirements. Use the specified device power supply and follow its instructions.

DC / MODEL-SPECIFIC

Use an approved converter.

A matching-looking plug does not establish compatibility. Verify input voltage, regulated output, polarity, current and the exact converter listed for your CPAP model.

DEDICATED CPAP BATTERY

Compare approved options too.

A model-compatible dedicated battery may fit your needs better than a general power station. Ask your equipment provider about current supported battery options and realistic runtime for your prescribed setup.

ResMed publishes model-specific battery and converter guidance. Its AirSense 11 and earlier-device accessories must not be treated as interchangeable. Confirm the exact accessory against current manufacturer documentation.

Humidification & heated tubing

Measure the Setup
You Actually Use.

Plan with your normal prescribed setup, including heated humidification or heated tubing when used. These functions contribute to the total energy budget; their draw can vary during the night.

A supply label’s watt rating is not a measured nightly average. If you have energy data for a full session, divide its watt-hours by the session duration to get a useful average planning draw.

For example, a measured 400 Wh over eight hours averages 50 W. With the Zaron assumptions, its one-night battery target is 400 ÷ 0.90 × 1.20 = 533.33 Wh. This arithmetic is illustrative, not a machine rating.

SIZE FOR THE NIGHT, NOT THE LABEL

Stored energy is the limiting budget.

A 600 W inverter can have only 286 Wh of storage. At the illustrative 60 W load, this method gives 3.58 planning hours — less than an eight-hour session. Confirm both output compatibility and sufficient watt-hours.

Before relying on backup

Six Checks Before Bedtime.

01 / MODEL & ACCESSORIES

Confirm supported use.

Check CPAP and power-station instructions for compatibility and restrictions on medical loads. Obtain the exact supported supply or converter.

02 / WHOLE SESSION

Test the actual load.

Test under your provider’s guidance with your real device, settings and accessories. A capacity calculation cannot replace a full-session verification.

03 / OUTPUT TIMEOUTS

Keep the output active.

Check low-load shutoff, AC/DC timeout, sleep modes and battery cutoff behavior. Confirm the output remains available throughout the session.

04 / TRANSFER BEHAVIOR

Verify the outage transition.

A marketed UPS mode is not proof of medically suitable continuity. Follow manufacturer restrictions and confirm how the device behaves if mains power disappears.

05 / RECHARGE & RESERVE

Start with verified charge.

Charge according to instructions. For multiple nights, plan reliable recharge or enough capacity without it. Allow for temperature, aging and standby losses.

06 / FALLBACK

Have a provider-approved plan.

Arrange an alternative power source or location if backup fails or the outage continues. Life-support ventilation and oxygen equipment require separate specialized planning.

Methodology

The Math, Visible.

Total drawMeasured full setup, or base plus additional draw without double-counting.W
Nightly energyTotal average watts × session hours. Divide by 1,000 for kWh.Wh/night
Outage energyNightly raw energy × number of nights, with no recharge assumed.Wh
Battery targetDivide raw Wh by 0.90 assumed efficiency, then multiply by 1.20 for a planning margin.Wh
20 W × 8 hours × 1 night = 160 Wh raw energy
Battery target = 160 ÷ 0.90 × 1.20 = 213.33 Wh → round up to 214 Wh
60 W × 8 hours × 3 nights ÷ 0.90 × 1.20 = 1,920 Wh

90% efficiency and 20% margin are Zaron planning assumptions, not medical recommendations or universal constants. They do not account precisely for every inverter or DC converter. The model assumes a constant average load, full starting charge and no additional connected loads.

FAQ

Straight Answers.

What is the best power station for CPAP?

There is no universal choice. Start with the exact machine, approved power connection and measured session energy. Choose capacity that covers the needed nights with reserve, then confirm both manufacturers permit the application.

Will 286 Wh last an entire night?

Under the 20 W eight-hour illustration, the target is about 214 Wh, so 286 Wh exceeds that energy target. Under the 60 W example, it falls below the 640 Wh target. Neither calculation guarantees runtime for your machine.

Can I turn off humidification to save power?

Discuss any change to your prescribed setup with your care team or equipment provider. This tool models energy inputs; it does not recommend changing therapy or accessory settings to fit a battery.

Does a UPS feature guarantee uninterrupted CPAP operation?

No. Check the exact power-station and CPAP manuals, including medical-use restrictions and transfer behavior. Confirm the backup arrangement with your provider and verify actual operation before relying on it.

Can I use a generic DC cable?

Use only a power connection supported for the exact device and source. Verify voltage, polarity, current and converter requirements. Do not infer compatibility from the plug shape.

Are these medically approved recommendations?

No. This is a capacity comparison based on published power-station specifications and editable assumptions. Your equipment provider must confirm a suitable CPAP continuity plan. It does not cover life-support ventilation or oxygen equipment.
